The Labrakakis Lab uses electrophysiological, chemogenetic and behavioral approaches to investigate the neurobiological mechanisms involved in the sensation of pain. We are focusing on indentifying neuronal circuits, cellular and molecular aspects in the chronification of pain.

The lab is part of the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies at the University of Ioannina and affiliated with the Institute of Biosciences of the University Research Center of Ioannina (URCI)

Lab News

January 2025 - Congratulations to Despoina Liang for being awarded the Sidney Altman PhD Scholarship by Fondation Sante

August 2024 - In a new study from our lab published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Despoina Liang shows systematic axonal projections from the posterior insula to several brainstem structures of the descending pain modulatory system.

January 2024 - In our paper in Frontiers in Pain Research, led by Amalia Natsi, we show that while chronic pain leads to increased vigilance to predator odors it also leads to increased anxiety to neutral odors.

May 2023 - Amalia Natsi is presenting her poster "Posterior insular cortex plasticity in neuropathic pain" @ the FENS Regional Meeting in Algarve Portugal

March 2023 - Our review article "The Role of the Insular Cortex in Pain" is published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences
